Raiders shoot down Rockets

By Ryan Hehr
Once Wright State's game against Toledo began on Tuesday night, there was hardly a doubt among anyone watching that Wright State was going to win.

The Raiders went on a 9-0 scoring streak to start the game and never looked back as they went on to win 66-56.

There was never a lead change in the game, and the closest the Rockets came to giving Wright State a run for their money was when a Stephen Albrecht jump shot put the score at 61-56 with 1:58 left to play. But being forced to foul, the Rockets sent Vaughn Duggins to the foul line six times in the final two minutes.

Duggins made five of his six free-throw attempts for the Raiders to sew up the victory.

While Wright State put up 66 points in the win - nine points higher than their average of 57 points-per-game last season - it was their defense that helped win. The same defense that head coach Brad Brownell has been talking about all season.

The Raiders committed just 14 fouls on the night and sent the Rockets to the foul line only five times.

The win also marked a first for Wright State this season. Prior to Tuesday, the Raiders had not won on an opponent's floor since last season. That win came back on Feb. 18 against UIC.

To accomplish the feat, Wright State had three players in double digits for scoring. Duggins had a game high 17 points while Todd Brown posted 16. Cory Cooperwood had 14.

Ronnie Thomas, Troy Tabler and Scott Grote each had five rebounds.

Wright State will now take on Miami on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. The Raiders have beaten the RedHawks in three of the last four meeting between the two teams, but was defeated 55-37 last season at the Nutter Center.
