Raiders claw their way to 67-54 win over Penguins

Shooting a miserable 36% from the field does not normally result in a win but the Raiders took advantage of YSU's 23 turnovers (24 Raider points) in moving to 5-2 (2-0 HL). The Raiders outscored Youngstown State 15-7 over the final five minutes to seal the victory.

YSU jumped to an early lead and were on fire from the field for the first 7-8 minutes. WSU got untracked with a Cory Cooperwood layup at 17:44. The Raiders played solid defense against the Penguins (23 turnovers and 10 steals) but could not get their offensive game going. First half shooting was 33%.

Troy Tabler however came in early in the first half and had a career game. In 31 minutes of played Troy scored a career high 24 points including 10-10 from the FT line.

Todd Brown chipped in 15 and grabbed 8 rebounds while playing essentially the entire game. Cory Cooperwood grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds of which 7 were offensive boards.

The Raiders now hold a 32-7 all-time record over YSU - Brad Brownell is 6-1. The last time YSU defeated WSU was February 23, 2007 in Youngstown. The Penguins have not won in the Nutter Center since a December 1994 win.

YSU's DeAndre Mays (12.PPG) was held to 4 points. Sirlester Martin scored 16, 7 over his average. Vance Cooksey was YSU other double figure scorer with 12. YSU shot 26% for the game.

Much like Thursday game against CSU, a Raider showed a little emotion tonight and was promptly given a technical by the men in stripes. Tonight it was Todd Brown; Thursday it was Cory. There was no fighting, raised voices, or otherwise egregious act, no it was celebratory hand-clapping for Cory and much the same for Todd. Lighten up refs; there's no need for the quick whistle over harmless emotions.

Next up for WSU are three road games - Tuesday at Toledo at 7 pm, Sunday (Dec. 13) at Miami at 3 pm and then to Mississippi St on December 16 for a game in Starksville at 7pm (TV).

Dinner with the Raiders?

I've heard that the Raider Men's team will be having dinner at the BD's Mongolian Grill in the Greene this coming Thursday night (Dec. 10) at 6pm. If you have no dinner plans...
