Women Close out the Regular Season with a Win!

By Kevin C. Smith
In one of the seasons most exciting, if not THE most exciting game of the year, the Wright State Women's team closed out their regular season today. In a close game they came from behind to beat UIC in the Nutter Center 49-48. They will open Horizon League Championship Tournament play Wednesday at Valparaiso.

If the Wright State men's team had to play against Cleveland State without Duggins, Thomas and Cooperwood due to game day suspensions, how would the game turnout? That essentially was what the women were facing today. In what was going to be a tough game against a team they lost to in January, 60-47, the Lady Raiders had to face UIC with just nine players.

High Scoring Sophomore Shey Peddy (12.4ppg/2.9 steals); 6-2 Sophomore Tanni Scott (1.5 rebounds per game) and 6-1 Junior Erica Richardson (3.6ppg, 4.5 Rebounds) were all benched today for unknown reasons. Additionally Paige Lowe is injured and wasn't playing. Could the rest of the team pull a win off for senior day??

In the first half it wasn't looking good. UIC got off to a 6-0 lead before Sophomore Ta-myra Davis sank a layup at 18:07 in the game. Wright State would trail the Flames throughout the half. UIC had as much as a nine point lead with 11 minutes to go. Then Davis hit three baskets and a free-throw to reduce the Flames lead to just two.

UIC however continued to hold on to the lead until another Davis layup with 25 seconds left in the half, gave the Raiders their first lead, 26-25. A Davis free throw sent the Lady Raiders to the locker room with a 27-25 lead.

Davis sank 12 points in the first half to lead all players. She also grabbed three rebounds. Junior Charne Dixon grabbed two steals, two boards and two assists. As a team, WSU was shooting 38.7% (12-31) while the Flames were hitting 42.9% of their shots. The Raiders were also controlling the boards with a 20-16 advantage.

The Lady Raiders returned to play building a 10 point lead twice, before having a scoring drought. UIC did a nine minute, 17-0 run to take lead. The Flames were up by six with just under four and a half minutes to go, when the Raiders battled back.

Two Fox free throws, a layup by Thomas and three-pointer by Freshman Maria Bennett gave the Raiders a one point lead with a little over a minute left. UIC would take back the lead, 48-46, on a jumper and foul shot with just 46 seconds on the clock.

Time was running out for the Lady Raiders, but with just six seconds left on the clock, Junior Kanisha Ward, 0-4 to this point in the game from beyond the arc, hit the biggest three point of her career to get the win for Wright State. Those were Wards only points in the game, but they huge! The Lady Raiders, even with a short bench, beat UIC 49-48 in an exciting game!

The 210 fans in attendance saw WSU shoot 38% (19-50), while grabbing 8 steals and 35 rebounds. UIC, with a major height advantage today, only had 32 boards, but did have a 3-1 advantage in blocked shots. Wright States single blocked shot was a "Fox Block"(she appeared the top of the key and swatted the ball out of bounds) during the second half. The Raiders also shot 61.5% from the line above their 57.8% average.

Davis finished the afternoon leading all players with 13 points (yes she only sank a free throw in the second half!), one steal, an assist and seven rebounds. Thomas sank 11 points with two assists, a steal, and five rebounds.

Senior Mallory Wyrick was recognized before the game for her contributions to the team by Coach Bridgett Williams and Athletic Director Bob Grant. Wyrick also got her first start today.

The Lady Raiders will now prepare for the Horizon League Championship next week. They are seeded fifth and will play their quarterfinals game at Valparaiso. The game will be on Wednesday the 11th at 7pm. It will be available on HLN.

Today however, the Lady Raiders finished their regular season play beating UIC 49-48.
