Women Look to make it Four in a Row Saturday

By Kevin Smith
The Lady Raiders (10-12/7-4 HL) look to continue moving up in the HL when they host Youngstown State (11-12/6-6 HL) on Saturday at 1pm in the Nutter Center. The Lady Raiders are now in 3rd place in the HL while YSU is tied in sixth.

After a great defensive effort Thursday night against Cleveland State, the Lady Raiders now look to close out this home stand with another victory. This team has shown throughout the season they are a multi-talented group of players and anyone can step up at any time to fill a void. They are nationally ranked at #19 shooting 37.9% from beyond the arc and #47 with a 43.4% FG percentage as of Feb 10th.

This season, Freshman Shey Peddy has been having a great first year with WSU. She is ranked #16 in the country, and number 1 in the HL with 3.1 steals per game and she shoots 55.4% from the floor which places her at 28 nationally. Peddy is #4 in the HL with 15.2ppg and #8 in three point FG% shooting 38% from beyond the arc.

Senior Whitney Lewis is the second best player in the nation for three point FG percentage. She sinks 49.4 percent of her treys. She is also #13 in the HL with 12.2ppg and she grabs 5.2 rebounds each outing.

The women also have Sophomore Kanisha Ward #1 in the HL with 1.82 steals per game and Freshman LaShawna Thomas who averages 10.4ppg. After staring out slow, the bench for WSU has started to provide serious relief for the team including the 10 points they provided Thursday.

Youngstown is being lead by 6-0 Junior Forward Tiara Scott who sinks 13.5ppg (9th in the HL) and grabs 6.7 boards each game (#4 in HL). They also have 5-10 Senior Guard Heather Karner who is makes 13.4ppg, placing her #11 in the HL. However on Thursday the Lady raiders held CSU's Kailey Klein to just 7 points compared to her 18.9 average. The Raiders will need that tough defense again on Saturday.

Hopefully fans especially students will come out on Saturday at 1pm when the third place Lady Raiders take on YSU in the Nutter Center. After a dinner break fans can then return to watch the men host UIC at 7pm. After this contest, the Lady Raiders will go on a two game road trip that includes Butler on Thursday, before returning to begin a final two game home stand on Feb 28th when they host Loyola at 7pm.
