This game should have been and for the most part was, an easy win for Wright State. Earlier this season WSU beat Detroit, in Detroit by a score of 71-53 with four players in double digits. The Lady Raiders have continued to improve since then, unfortunately Detroit has not and they own the bottom place in the Horizon league.
The Lady Raiders started the scoring with Freshman Shey Peddy getting a steal and fast break to open the game. By the time Senior Whitney Lewis hit her second three point shot at the 11:48 mark the score was 13-7.
Detroit wasn't going to give up however. They actually took the lead twice in the first half. Their largest lead of two points coming with 3:28 left in the half. The Lady Raiders however took the lead back at the 2:43 mark with a Peddy free throw. At the buzzer, the Lady Raiders went to the locker room with a 32-24 lead.
Wright State shot 50% (11-22) in the half and out rebounded Detroit 14-7. Each team committed 13 turnovers, but WSU grabbed 20 points off turnovers to just 9 for Detroit.
Lewis was leading the scoring with 8 points followed by Peddy with seven. Sophomore Charne Dixon pulled down a rebound, sank 5 points and picked up two steals in the half.
The second half saw WSU continue to control the play, with Thomas getting a lay-up followed by Peddy and Lewis. At the 16:33 mark the Lady Raiders had a 13 point lead, 38-25. Although Detroit tried to stay in the game, the lead would open up to 20 points, 54-34 with 9:34 left on the clock. The closest Detroit would manage is an eight point deficit shooting free throws with just 11 seconds left.
Coach Williams used all of her players except Junior Mallory Wyrick and Sophomore Heather Parrish today. Three players finished in double digits for the Lady Raiders. Peddy sank 17 points, followed by Lewis with 15 and Thomas with 10. Lewis, Dixon and Sophomore Erica Richardson each grabbed five rebounds to help WSU control the boards 29-22. The Lady Raiders finished shooting 57.9% (22-38) including 6 for 9 from beyond the arc. In the end the Lady Raiders get a home win, 70-59.
The Lady Raiders will now host a strong Cleveland State team on Thursday night at 5:30 in the Nutter Center. The WSU men will follow at 8pm. It will be a good double header for everyone to come out and cheer for WSU.
