Second Place Lady Raiders Look to Move Up

By Kevin Smith
While the WSU men's team has been getting all the publicity, the Lady Raiders (12-13/9-5 HL) have quietly been improving and moving up the charts in the Horizon League and the Nation. They hope to continue to advance Thursday at 7 when they host Loyola (6-19/4-10 HL).

The Wright State women's team has been constantly improving with a spectrum of talented players. Currently, they claim the top rated player in the nation for three-point field goal percentage, Senior Whitney Lewis. She is averaging 49.5% from beyond the arc. Lewis leads the team with 5.5 rebounds per game, 13th in the HL, as well. She isn't alone in national ranking however.

Freshman Shey Peddy (Melrose/Boston MA) is ranked 20th in the nation with 3.1 steals per game, which also makes her number one in the HL. Peddy also holds the 36th spot nationally sinking 54.6% of her shots. Not shabby at all for a freshman far from her Boston home.

They are also getting great play from another Freshman, LaShawna Thomas (Eastmoor Academy/Columbus OH) who is putting in 11.2ppg. That's 18th in the HL. Thomas also sinks 43.2% of her shots - 15th place in the league.

The talents on this team have seen them move their Sagarin Ratings from the mid two hundreds to the current 177 rating. Now, Loyola will come to challenge them in the Nutter Center.

Although Loyola is ninth in the league they do have some good players. Maggie McCloskey is sixth nationally with 2.9 three point baskets per game and shoots 43.5% from beyond the arc, 15th best in the nation. However it was just at the beginning of the month that the Lady Raiders traveled to Loyola and beat them 56-49. While WSU is on a two game winning streak, Loyola is on a two game losing streak and hoping to reverse their fortune Thursday night.

The Lady Raiders have the potential on Thursday to claim 2nd place for their own. Cleveland State (15-10/9-5 HL) is playing Valparaiso at CSU. A win for Wright State and a loss for CSU will let the Lady Raiders claim second all for themselves. So Thursday at 7pm in the Nutter Center the Lady Raiders will need to beat Loyola.

On Saturday will be the Lady Raiders will play their last home game of the season against UIC (9-16/5-9) at 1pm. Raider fans should come to these last women's games of the season and see the quiet WSU basketball team that's making a lot of noise.
