WSU

Women Have a Good WIN and Saturday will try for Another

By Kevin Smith
Thursday the Lady Raiders (4-3 HL/8-10 Overall) had a good win over Youngstown State, 72-41. That win was without one of their best player, Shey Peddy who served a one game suspension for team rule violations. Saturday they will try for another win when they host Cleveland State (4-2 HL/9-7 Overall) at 4:30 in the Nutter Center. The men will face off against UIC after the Women play, at 7pm.

Wright State, currently in sixth place in the Horizon League had an easy time against Youngstown on Thursday. A good mix of three point shots, shots in the paint and four players in double digits put them in the lead and they walked away with the game. A repeat of this on Saturday would be a major surprise.

Cleveland State is tied for third place in the HL. If you look at the Sagarin ratings, CSU is 94 and WSU sits at 167. The NCAA also lists CSU as one of the "Most Improved" teams in the country and they are currently on a three game winning streak as well. The Lady Vikings will not be as easy to beat, but WSU can do it. Last year they split the series, with each winning on their home court. However, it was Cleveland State who beat WSU for the HL Championship last year. Is a little revenge possible?

Wright State, which has won four of its last six games, is developing into a good team. They still however have difficulties. Coach Williams told me she has now pretty much worked up some good pairings of the players, but there's still room for improvement.

Wright States offense is being lead by Sophomores LaShawna Thomas with 13.4ppg and Shey Peddy with 12.5. Peddy is also the team's top stealer and nationally ranked for steals per game at 3.2.

The women have a mix of offensive threats this year not just two players. Both Junior Kanisha Ward and Freshman Maria Bennett are tied at 6th in the HL for their three point percentages. They are both shooting 40.9 percent from beyond the arc.

The team has several players who lead the defense, including Sophomore Ta-Myra Davis with five rebounds and 7.7 points per game. Junior Erica Richardson is grabbing 4.8 boards and hits for 3.9 points while Freshman Molly Fox pulls down 4.4 rebounds and sinks 5.8ppg. Fox is also #7 in the HL with 2.3 Offensive Rebounds per game.

Saturday, this mix of players will face a team with three players who shoot in the double digits. Senior Dominique Butler hits 10.2 points while grabbing 7.4 rebounds per game. This team will pose some serious competition for the Lady Raiders.

Saturday the women will have their hands full. Cleveland State will not be as easy as Youngstown to beat. WSU must mix their plays and protect the ball. They must reduce their turnovers. If they play tough they can get the win!

Saturday the Lady Raiders take to their home court to face off against Cleveland State at 4:30. The men will follow at 7pm. The women will continue this home stand next Saturday the 31st against Detroit, starting at 1:00.

Come out Saturday and watch BOTH WSU teams play!
