The Lady Raiders, behind 50% (22-44) shooting, two busted lips and two players in double digits defeated a physical playing Valparaiso (6-7/1-2 HL) team tonight at the Nutter Center. It was tough messy game, but a combination of strong WSU defense and some outside shooting made sure Valpo did not get the win. This was Valpo's third consecutive loss to WSU.
Junior Erica Richardson got the opening tip off and Sophomore LaShawna Thomas opened the scoring at 19:01 with a jump shot. Wright State would keep the lead until Valpo took a one point lead, 16-15 with 6:35 left in the half. By the end of the half, the game had been tied four times and the lead changed hands four times. Wright State went to the Locker room with the lead, 23-20.
The Lady Raiders sank 40.7% (11-27) while grabbing 21 rebounds and getting four steals in the opening half. Valpo shot 27.3% (6-22). Turnovers were out of control for both teams tonight and WSU had 15 in the half while Valpo had 12.
Sophomore Shey Peddy put in 10 points and three steals during the first half. Thomas was leading the defense with six boards while also sinking six points. These two players would lead the team throughout the game.
The second half of this game would belong to the Raiders. During the second half both Richardson and Peddy would be hit in the mouth and need to come out of the game until treated and the bleeding stopped. Richardson was also called for a walk while dribbling. These things didn't stop the team's determination to get the win.
The half started with several turnovers, missed shots and fouls until 17:10 when Valpo tied the game with a three point shot at 23 each. At 15:52, Peddy responded with her own three to retake the lead. Valpo would never tie or get the lead again. They came within one point (26-25) on a free throw however. The Lady Raiders would have a 12 point lead twice before the final buzzer sounded and the Lady Raiders finished with a ten point win, 54-44.
Peddy finished leading all scorers with 19 points. She also had three boards and three steals. Thomas was next with 17 points, nine rebounds and a steal. As a team WSU shot 50% (22-44) and grabbed 38 rebounds and eight steals.
Valpo shot 24.5% (12-49) while only getting 25 rebounds. They did have nine steals and two players in double digits. Both teams displayed bad ball control with WSU turning it over 31 times, while Valpo gave it up 21 times. Both teams gained 16 points each off the turnovers.
The Lady Raiders will now host Butler on Saturday at 1pm. Hopefully they will continue winning. They need fan support for Saturday's game!
INJURY REPORT: Both Peddy and Richardson recovered from their injuries and returned to the game. Richardson however is still suffering from her ankle injury and it's heavily taped.
Sophomore Tanni Scott is sidelined with a knee injury from practice. She will have an MRI on Monday to determine the extent of the injury.
